John the Golden-Mouthed (Part 4): Developing into an Eloquent Preacher & the “Homilies on the Statues”

John Chrysostom quickly developed into an influential preacher. His exegetical approach, his prophetic spirit, and his extemporaneous delivery contributed to his growing reputation. A tax rebellion in the city of Antioch (in which the emperor’s statues were destroyed) led John to preach a dramatic series of sermons that were named “Homilies on the Statues.”
