The Day I First Met Daisy

A. Faith Brummel

I met Daisy on a sunny June day. The sky was cloudless, but the breeze was cool. I opened the window shade and peered out. I hoped to glimpse a trailer coming down our country road. A dark shape came over the rise in the road, and I held my breath until, with a sigh of frustration, I realized it was only a van and not the longed-for trailer. I sat in a silent watch till about 2:30 that afternoon, I heard the crunch of tires turning onto our gravel driveway. I hurried down from my bedroom and saw the 20-foot animal trailer that held my first-ever cow! I pulled on my rubber boots and ran outside with the rest of my family, realizing at that moment that this was really happening, I was getting a cow!

Since moving from our neighborhood to the country, I had been dreaming about buying a cow. My father looked for months into the type of cow that would be a good milk cow for me and investigated beef cows that he could buy for himself. After a long time of searching, we decided to buy British White Park cattle, which are an all-white cow, except for their black ears, black noses, and black feet. I bought my dream cow from a man who had been specially breeding a British White Park for milking for his entire. So, when I peered into the trailer on that cool summer afternoon, I saw a pure white cow with black feet, nose, and ears. She was a little smaller than the rest of the cattle in the trailer.

It had been a dream for so long that when I went outside, I was overjoyed to see my cow behind the barn. I was outside much more than usual now that I had a cow to train. My cow, Daisy, is to me a picture of a dream coming true. With all her unique quirks such as kicking being milked, being easily annoyed, etc. I have learned by having her as a milk cow. Things like how to teach an animal 12 times your size, how to not get angry at an animal, and most of all how to be faithful and constant, when you must milk twice a day rain or shine. Having a cow is an experience in my life that has taught me so much.
